Enjoying A Basketball Night
Well, this was a nice night in which I had the opportunity, for the first time, to watch a basketball game in USA. It was a great show. The game was Philadelphia 76ers vs Atlanta Hawks. Unfortunately the 76ers lost the game, but the organization around the game was fantastic as I heard from some radio speakers in Brazil.Being inside the gymnasium brought to my memories the time I could play basketball in a competitive way and I had a dream of one day to be in the NBA competition as a player. It was so inspiring to me and my friends from our "Black Friends" team to watch on TV Abdul Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and many more NBA athletes. So, this night looking at the court I was also moving my mind and soul together the Philadelphia and Atlanta players.
Visiting Arthur Ross Gallery
This Tuesday evening I visited the Arthur Ross Gallery. I saw an exposition from Willian H. Johnson an American Modern African American artist. His art brought to my mind the artwork of Tarsila do Amaral, a Brazilian artist who, as Johnson, produced artwork highlighting Afro-Brazilian Culture as in the picture in the link. Later on in the same gallery I watched a conversation involving three university educators. They talked about their books, black music history in USA and necessity of children have access to the roots of art and culture, such learning to play jazz. I felt like that, we have the same kind of problem in Brazil in terms of lack related to stimulating children`s understanding and producing popular culture content with good quality.American Culture
This page is related to the American Culture subject. We as a group of 25 Brazilian educators are studying here in Philadelphia during January and February 2014. I will report here diverse daily facts addressing observations from lifestyle and facts related to this opportunity of learning English and be immersed in the American and other cultures that are around Philadelphia. Today I went to a Birthday party of one the Brazilians educators. The party was produce based on what in Brazil we call ('festa americana' that means 'American Party'). In this kind of party everyone contributes with a plate of food and also with a drink. So it was a nice moment for talking with the mates listen to music, relax a bit from the several assessments we have for doing. And at the end four of us had a nice talk with a lady from the Republic of Chad, a country in central Africa. Like us she is studying in Philadelphia. She does medicine.
I've read some interesting things about the power of sports to teach language. Giving a group of people a common goal gives them a reason to communicate with each other in a new language.
